Name: Kyle
Three words to describe yourself: honest, loyal, friendly
Kyle is from Macon, Georgia but was born in Atlanta. He like Macon because of the small city/big city aspects, but likes Athens better. Living in the residence halls and always being next to friends has been Kyle's favorite part about college, but he said that adjusting to the workload has been the most difficult aspect. He comments, "During the first week, I think I studied more that I had in all four years of high school." Kyle said that he has always "been good with computers," so naturally, he is studying computer science, but his dream job would be a video game designer. As a short term goal, Kyle would like to graduate and get a job, but for the long-term, Kyle is just "taking each day as it comes . . . you're less overwhelmed that way." He did throw in something about the "American Dream" with 2.5 children and a white picket fence. He is also color-blind and has been to 42 states so far. One trip was to Niagra Falls and back, and the other was to Oregon and then through the Grand Canyon. He also went inside the Twin Towers before 9/11.
Every day, for an entire year, I am going to interview a different person, listen to his or her life story, and take a picture. I will post a brief summary of this person's history and include details such as: experiences, hometown, occupation, life goals, etc. We'll just see where the conversation leads! Here is my essay that I wrote for English detailing my project: http://365people365stories.blogspot.com/2011/11/365-people-365-stories-essay.html (Note: You have to copy/paste the link)

Name: Anastasia
Three words to describe yourself: bold, tough, bedazzled
Anastasia was born in Atlanta, but growing up, her family moved every six months, on average, because of her parents' jobs. Her favorite place that she lived was Boston, Massachusetts because the city was faced paced and she said, "It worked for me because I like to say what is on my mind." She said that moving around and adapting to different living environments helped her socially; she is not shy and is outgoing. As a future anesthesiologist, Anastasia is studying biology because it has always been an interest of hers. She also enjoys fashion and "staying with the trends," and she played volleyball and basketball in high school. Being away on her own has been Anastasia's favorite part about college, and at home, she has a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf filled completely with movies.

Name: Hope
Three words to describe yourself: spontaneous, curious, light-hearted
Hope is from Griffin, Georgia, and during high school, she wanted to leave in order to "change it up and meet new people," but now, looking back, Hope says she appreciates the "smallness and the quirky things about Griffin." Until high school graduation, she danced jazz, modern, and ballet, but stopped when she got to college because she was"burned out on it," and "didn't want it to be a career." Now she is trying new things, like playing ultimate frisbee and said that she has never played a team sport before. She is majoring in anthropology because she is "passionate about people and culture" and would like to do something to help people in the future. She said, "I think it's important for people to encourage one another," but "it's important to do things for yourself and to play around a lot. I'm serious when it comes to playing." Hope says that she always wants to go on an adventure because she can not sit still and would like to eventually go on a mission trip. At the age of sixteen, Hope became a Christian, after she started to explore different religions and deeper thinking. Hope used to get in trouble for being the class clown, but then she began searching for more meaning in life. She said that making the transition was difficult because her brother was an atheist, but is now training to become a YoungLife leader in a high school or middle school. Hope started to talk about how she is attracted to the concept of suffering. She said, "I think it's the one feeling that people have in common the most. It's what brings people together. I think the reason people suffer is to be able to relate to one another. We have the opportunity to use our suffering in a positive way." She is also drawn to people who suffer from addictions and hopelessness, but does not know how to pursue this.

Name: Lara
Three words to describe yourself: talkative, confusing, outgoing
Lara lived in Manhattan, New York for the first five years of her life, and then she moved to Smyrna, Georgia because her mom did not want her to grow up in the north or west. She is currently studying math because it was her favorite subject in high school, but she is thinking about becoming a math teacher or studying engineering, which would make her transfer to Georgia Tech. One thing Lara definitely wants to do is make a lot of money while she is young. She used to play soccer in high school, but since the age of two, Lara has had arthritis, which has prevented her from playing the sport. She told me that doctors could not come up with an explanation for her case. As a random fact, Lara's grandparents came to Ellis island as refugees from Estonia during World War II because Estonia was being occupied by Russia. In high school, Lara took art classes for two years. At first, she said that she was bad at painting, but with time and practice, she now enjoys painting works similar to Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Name: Lexi
Three words to describe yourself: eclectic, punny, shy
Lexi is from Thomasville, Georgia, but before moving to Athens, she spent the last three years of high school living with her older sister in Marietta. At UGA, Lexi was studying psychology, but as of today, she switched her major to Child and Family Development and is minoring in sociology. She wants to travel everywhere and has though about joining the Peace Corps because she enjoys serving others. She likes to learn how people act, but her real passion is movies and television, with Grease being her favorite movie (she said it's her default answer when asked that question). She says her dream job would be being the person that picks music for movies, and her ultimate goal would be to own her own music or be a singer. Lexi has a very good taste in music (well according to my standards!), and she was involved in show choir and chorus at her high school. Lexi said that she watches Glee only because she "fell in love" with The Glee Project and four of the contestants are on there. We also talked about Broadway Musicals, and Lexi mentions that she has seen Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, Legally Blonde on traveling Broadway, and Cats "not by choice. She is Mormon and has continued to practice her faith in college joining organizations on-campus and going to church on Sundays. Lexi also has three older siblings who are all at least ten years older than her.

Name: Linda Rae
Three words to describe yourself: outgoing, thoughtful, sedentary
Linda Rae was born in San Antonio, Texas and lived there until the age of nine, when her family moved to Germany because her dad was in the army. She went to college at Texas A&I in Kingsfield (now Texas A&M Kingsfield) to major business. During her studies, however, she got sick and had to drop out. Linda Rae returned to school at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas Southern University) and got married in 1971. She worked in the transportation industry in an office for three years. After her husband died in '75, Linda Rae worked at a recycling place "again, in an office," and in '75, she married Tom. They moved to Corpus Christi, Texas where she worked as a secretary for a psychiatrist. Afterwards, Linda Rae went back to school to take enough accounting classes to become a CPA, and she had twins in '81.
Tom was in the National Guard, so the family moved back to San Antonio, and in '86, they moved to New Orleans, Louisiana where Linda Rae worked at a television station until 1993. She comments, "I was in show-business!!...Well as an accountant." She said it was glamorous to travel to New York and Hollywood, staying at the Four Seasons Hotel for budget meetings. Linda Rae also mentions that she was a smoker starting in 1973 until 1993--when she received a newsletter for a non-smoking class at the hospital, took the class, and found it very successful. In 1993, Linda Rae also got fired from her job. She said that a co-worker had unacceptable behavior and was obnoxious, and when she brought this up to her boss, he did not fire him, so she left. Afterwards, Linda Rae got an accounting job with the Louisiana military department. She stressed that "everything you've heard about Louisiana is true." From 1998-2000, she worked for a weekly newspaper as a reporter and typesetter, and when Tom retired from the National Guard, they moved back to San Antonio.
Linda Rae then became a receptionist for Holy Spirit Catholic Church until, 2006, when she was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer. At first, she said her diagnosis didn't bother her and that she stayed very calm. She said, "It took me two months to find out that this sort of thing is supposed to cause me grief." Since her diagnosis and treatment, Linda Rae has been cancer-free for five years, and now she "does good works and plays with friends." She also describes herself as a "voracious reader" reading "trashy fiction, murder mysteries, and thrillers," but avoiding romance novels. She also does volunteer work with a food pantry that also helps people pay for their rent and utilities, which is something her father did. In 2013, her husband, Tom, is going to become a Deacon, so Linda Rae says she has to "learn how to become a Deacon's wife . . . which I think means you sit still and be quiet."

Name: Mike
Three words to describe yourself: entrepreneurial, motivated, intelligent
Mike was born and raised in Iowa, and he now lives in San Antonio, Texas with his family working three jobs. He is an instructor pilot at Lackland Air Force Base, a commercial pilot for Delta Airlines, and he operates a self-storage business, along with investing in real estate. Ever since he was a little kid, Mike has wanted to fly planes, so after high school, he joined the National Guard and worked as a mechanic in college. After graduating, Mike interview for a pilot slot training, and since then, has commercially flown all over the world. Currently, he is flying only domestic with Delta and trains pilots locally around the San Antonio area. Out of all the places he has traveled to, Mike said that Moscow was the most interesting because he "grew up with the U.S.S.R. as an enemy" and "learned about the country in the military," but he said that "each city in Europe was fascinating." He has a daughter that will graduate from high school within the next few years, so a goal that Mike has with his family is to visit all fifty states before she graduates. He points out the travel benefits of working for an airline. Over the holiday break, his family traveled to North Dakota, Seattle, Washington, and New York City to watch the ball drop on New Year's Eve. Mike said that ever since he can remember, he has worked two jobs, so he is looking forward to retiring from the National Guard within the next few years. Other than some personal goals he has with his wife, Mike would like to travel with his family, and "earn enough money to retire comfortably." I asked if he had any stories to tell about being an airline pilot, and Mike replied that "it's been pretty boring, which is good . . . most of the stories come from being a passenger on an aircraft."

Three words to describe yourself: sarcastic, honest, sociable
Emirami was born in Fiji and lived there until the age of nine when his mom married his stepdad from the States. From Fiji, he moved to Loganville, Georgia and then to Snellville, Georgia in 9th grade. Emirami did not speak any English coming here, so he said he "had to learn quickly in order to make new friends." At first arrival, Emirami said that he saw so many white people, which was a rare sight to see in Fiji. When he first came to UGA, he was pre-med, but after taking freshman chemistry, he switched majors to International Business and Management. He loves traveling and wants to go back to Fiji and work for the Fiji Water Corporation or to "contribute in some way to the country." His wild dream, however, is to become the prime minister of Fiji. He says, "I embrace my culture whereas other people that move to the U.S. completely forget their roots." Emirami also says, "I think back on how lucky I am . . . My step dad knew my mom had kids, but still helped . . . I feel very blessed." He also loves to play tennis and grew up playing volleyball in Fiji.

Name: Josh
Three words to describe yourself: determined, honest, trustworthy
For the first thirteen years of his life, Josh lived in Melbourne, Georgia and then moved to Helen, Georgia, and he said the transition was weird because he had a lot of friends in Melbourne that he had to leave behind. Josh loves math and science, so he is currently pre-med, so that he can take plenty of math and science classes. He just finds that learning "calculus is more interesting than Aztecs." He says that his interests are similar to his dad who is a doctor. Josh used to be sponsored for a Halo team, but stopped because "it took too much time" and he needed to focus on school. As far as college life, Josh says that it's more difficult but that he likes the independence and being able to pursue what he wants. I asked what the best thing was that happened to him today, and he replied that it was this conversation because Josh has been studying U.S. history all day. In his life, Josh wants "to be happy and have a good family with good morals." He also believes that everything happens for a reason.

Name: Abi
Three words to describe yourself: eclectic, idealistic, passionate
Abi was born in Nashville, Tennesee and moved to Pronton, Ohio because her dad got a job there as a music director. Her mom "got sick of the cold", so the family moved to Brunswick, Georgia, then to Moultrie, Georgia when Abi was in 3rd grade. Abi loves performing and singing, so she is appropriately studing Theater at UGA. Both of Abi's parents were music and theater majors in college, so she said that she's "a product of their talents." As a short-term goal, Abi would like to become more self-confident, which well "help during performances." For a long term goal, Abi says that she would like to become more well-known in order to help charities. Her dream though, is to become "cliché famous" so that she can become a philantropist. Her step-brother lives in San Francisco, and Abi says that she can see herself living there one day. She said, "It's a clean city, and the people are incredibly friendly! There's a lot of variety." Abi said that her brother hacked into Facebook one day, and made the website look more like Myspace. The people from Facebook found out that it was her brother, so they interviewed him for a job, and he invested in stocks after receiving the job. Her brother is now retired at the age of 22. Other than I giant obsession with Glee, Abi also has an obsession with Darren Criss. I asked if she wishes her life were like a musical, and Abi replied, "More than anything. That's where the 'idealism' comes into place." Before Glee, Abi said that she had not performed for a while, and "Glee returned excitement for performing during the last years of high school."

Three words to describe yourself: princess, love, compassion
Cierra is from Decatur, Georgia and is studying Business Management at UGA in hopes of owning a dance studio that empowers women and girls. She has been dancing since the age of five and dances ballet, modern, jazz, and pointe, but her favorite style is ballet. She likes ballet above others because of "the sense of tradition. The world is constantly changing, but it's the one thing that stays the same." At first, Cierra wanted to be a professional dancer, then a physical therapist for dancers, but now she is "following her passion" by opening her own studio. Even though most of her time is spent on college classes and dancing with the UGA Dance Dawgs, Cierra still takes dance classes on the side. She loves people, food, clothes, and makeup and says her favorite dish is Miso Salmon from The Cheescake Factory. Cierra also likes to listen to "old-school" love songs, like Celine Dion, and Love and Basketball is her favorite movie.

Name: Imani
Three words to describe yourself: bubby, ambitious, nice
Imani is from Decatur, Georgia and has lived there since the age of three. As a child, she grew up with her mom working in the school system, so Imani is studying Early Childhood Education in hopes of becoming a kindergarten teacher. In 5th grade, she would read stories to kindergarteners, so she definitely has experience! As a long-career goal, Imani would like to either own a daycare or become a superintendent. In her free time, Imani likes to shop for jewelry, and H&M is her favorite store. She is a Gemini, and I asked if her horoscope matches, and she replied that "It's a good description, but I don't agree with everything." In her life, Imani wants to travel to Paris, South Africa, and maybe somewhere in Asia, but says "with a teacher's salary? Shoot!" Her biggest goal, however, is to "make a difference in somebody's life; whether it's teaching others or just have someone thank me for helping."

Name: Mehrzad
Three words to describe yourself: caring, hardworking, fun
Mehrzad was born in Maryland, but moved to Florida, Kansas, and finally Alpharetta, Georiga before moving to Athens for college. His parents are originally from Iran, and they met at a wedding in the States. Mehrzad would like to become a corporate lawyer, so he is pre-law studying Finance and International Business. In his free time, he likes to play ultimate frisbee and soccer and enjoys being active. As a long term goal, Mehrzad wants to leave his mark somewhere, "however big or small." He does not know how he will do this, but he was saying that his uncle started helping poor people in Iran and his efforts turned into a big organization. He has been to Iran before and says the culture is very different, and he has not mastered the language, so "it's hard to carry on a conversation." Mehrzad thinks that he would want to do something similar. For a short-term goal, Mehrzad would like to graduate college within the next two-three years. Melissa (in the picture) is also his girlfriend, and Mehrzad says he "would like the world to know that." His friend, Zainab, says that Mehrzad has the best karma and "is the most kind-hearted, compassionate person ever."

Name: Shauyan
Three words to describe yourself: chill, active, smart
Shauyan was born in Berkeley, California, but only lived there for two years. He was raised in Roswell, Georgia and still has a lot of family out west. Both of his parents are from Iran, and his dad went to America for graduate school, while his mom left because of the revolution. Shauyan speaks Farsi, Spanish, and English and is Pre-Med at UGA. He said that he loves to work with kids but didn't have the patience to be a teacher, and he wanted to work in an office setting. One of his goals is to do a coast-to-coast bike ride to raise money for a charity that targets displaced families in the Middle East. We started to discuss political stability in that region, as well as poverty issues. Shauyan said that he has traveled to Italy and Israel, but he would like to. visit Cuba because he's "enticed about the country's culture and the fact [American's] can't go there." When Shauyan traveled to Israel with his parents, they visited a bazaar in the Muslim district, and while he was talking to a shop owner, Shauyan saw a gun go up because a guy was trying to shoplift and ended up getting shot in the arm. Shauyan said, "I was so freaked out. It was a bit traumatic." He likes to travel because "you get to bring some culture back with you." If Shauyan could do anything in the world without any limitations or restrictions, he would sail around the world "like in Pirates of the Caribbean."

Name: Harrison
Three words to describe yourself: that's just weird
Harrison is originally from Griffin, Georgia and comments that "small towns create small minds." He is currently a sophomore, is interested in IT, and will probably become an Management Information Systems major. As a kid, he enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together and participating in science fairs. Harrison said that he's the "only person he knows that wears camo and boots and works on computers." His goal is to "not be as ignorant as possible," but he would also like to go skydiving, deep-sea fishing, and "get out of Georgia and not come back for a solid decade." He mentioned Montana as an option because Harrison also enjoys hunting and fishing. He started to talk about how he could start ranting like his grandfather about the problems of society, lack of morals, and inequality. He recommends listening to Peter Marshall and he commented, "I listened to three sermons on respective women. It will change you life." As some final words to wrap up the interview, Harrison says, "If you find a mushroom in a field, you should probably eat it."

Name: Dent (Wildman)
Three words to describe yourself: wildman, merchant, historian
Dent is originally from White County, Georgia and moved to Kennesaw in 1954. Before then he spent a few years living in Florida and other parts of Georgia, but he said these places have been the extent of his travels. In 1940, Dent saw Kennesaw for the first time, and said he "liked the small city," but now "it has been destroyed by political correctedness" and is "too overly industrialized." In 1971, he opened a Civil War Surplus shop in downtown Kennesaw that sells artifacts and all sorts of knick-knacks. He said that he "didn't know there had been a war" before he moved to Kennesaw, and at the beginning of his interests, Dent used metal detectors to find artifacts. He also told me that he played Stonewall Jackson in a movie, but I forgot what the movie was called. I asked what he finds most interesting about the Civil War, and he replied that it wasn't really a "Civil War." America was two different countries. Also, Dent said to be able to dig up history of the war out of the ground; "I'm still learning." Immediately, when you step into the store, you notice that Dent carries loaded pistols around his belt. I asked how many guns he owned, and his response was, "Personally? Or how many are in the store?" I also spoke to his co-worker about Dent, and she was very admirable of him. She said that Dent is very intelligent and he is always researching about new things that interest him. I would have liked to talk to him more, but I unfortunately had to leave. I highly recommend that if you're in the Kennesaw area, you should stop by the store! http://www.wildmans-shop.com/

Name: Jeff
Three words to describe yourself: I am Jeff
His co-worker that is in the background describes Jeff as witty and sarcastic. Jeff has lived most of his life in Georgia and says he is "about as white as they come." I asked if Jeff has done any world traveling, and he listed about twenty countries. So let's just say he's been all throughout Europe and parts of Asia. I asked what place gave him the biggest culture shock, and Jeff replied, "Istanbul. It's where east meets west; where Europe ends and Asia begins." He said he took the Orient Express when it was just a train. Jeff would like to travel to Australia, but he said he didn't know if he would be able to go. His co-worker asked if Jeff had any children, and he replied, "Kids? Not that I know of. I was a dog in my twenties." He also describes himself as a strong, devout Christian.

Name: Diamond
Three words to describe yourself: intelligent, giving, creative
Diamond is originally from Queens, NY, but spent most of her life growing up in Florida. After 7th grade, her family moved to Kennesaw because her mom didn't like Florida. Currently, Diamond is Pre-Med at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. A lot of her family members are nurses, and Diamond likes math and science and helping people, so medicine naturally interests her. She likes living in Louisiana, but when describing the people, Diamond says, "Their accents are ridiculous. I can't understand people sometimes." In high school, she trained for three years for athletic scholarships, so Louisiana was Diamond's best choice as far as athletic program options. She is a hammer thrower in track and field and would like to be NCAA All-American. Diamond also likes to paint but said she hasn't had time to paint often. When describing herself, Diamond says she loves to talk and is very friendly, but this is sometimes a bad thing because "it's so hard to get stuff done! I'm always distracted ."

Name: Kristina
Three words to describe yourself: nerd at heart
Kristina is a native of Kennesaw and is the eldest of four siblings. She has been home-schooled her whole life and loved her experience because she "had so much free time and could pick the things I wanted to learn . . . free to explore my own beliefs." She graduated this past May and has been taking the year off to work. In the Fall, she plans on attending the College of Charleston for pre-medicine to eventually become a heart surgeon. I asked what made her have an interest in medicine, and Kristina replies, "It's kind of embarrassing, but it was Grey's Anatomy." She also said she loves the hospital environment and "the feeling that you can save a person's life." A goal of Kristina's is to travel with her younger sister all throughout Europe taking pictures and blogging about their experiences. As a random fact, Kristina is half-Mexican but doesn't speak Spanish. She knows a little Italian and loves to read.

Name: Brandon
Three words to describe yourself: free, alive, breathing
Right away Brandon tells me that he's "dishonest about being dishonest," so our whole interview could potentially be a lie, but I think it's mostly true. Brandon is from Atlanta, Georgia but he was raised in different areas. He is in a one-man-band recording all of the instruments. He has played bass since the age of four, drums since seven, guitar since twelve, and plays other instruments such as the mandolin and the banjo. Brandon is also interested in permaculture, or sustainable agriculture modeled on natural relationships. He said, "I believe we should live in the cycle where everything in nature gets used . . . We waste so much. It's not a spiritual way to live." In his life, Brandon would like to "promote people to follow their hearts." He said that he expresses his heart through music and hopes that in doing so, other people are also inspired to follow their hearts. Brandon said that the changing point is when he went hitchhiking and lived in a tent in Florida for a month. He said he was most happy when he had nothing. The book, Into the Wild, and the transcendentalist mindset inspired him to "experience life at its fullest." I asked if there was anything else Brandon would like to do in his life, and he replied, "Wherever the Universe takes me, I'll go." Here is his Facebook page where he has some songs listed: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Little-Raven-Appleseed/310771118963241?v=app_2405167945

Name: Rebecca
Three words to describe yourself: nice, determined, friendly
Rebecca was born and raised in Kennesaw, Georgia, living in the same house her whole life. When she was younger she wanted to move to another neighborhood five minutes down the street because most of her friends lived there, but otherwise she's fine where she lives. Most of her family is from Georgia, but she is twenty-five percent Spanish. At UGA, Rebecca is studying Biology and is Pre-Med. Her interest in the human body was sparked when she broke her arm in second grade, and she asked the nurses who attended to her how the IV worked. Taking Anatomy & Physiology in high school made Rebecca realize she wanted to pursue medicine as a career. She does not want to be a family practitioner or work on the brain or heart. When I interviewed her, she was leaving for Peru in two days with Medlife to shadow doctors and do medical things that she wouldn't have the opportunity to do as an undergraduate in the States. When she is older, Rebecca would like to have a boy and a girl and "focus on family life," and Pinterest "sparks ideas such as wedding dreams and home decorations." She also likes the cold weather and wouldn't mind living in Utah "among all the snow people." She specified that she does not want to be a stay-at-home mom and would rather become a substitute teacher in order to be more involved in her children's lives. Rebecca also said she would like to do some volunteer work in Africa after she becomes a doctor. In her life, Rebecca said she was never really a part of community service, but since she joined a service sorority at UGA she's constantly doing a volunteer project such as mentoring a 5th grade girl. In her spare time, Rebecca likes to paint and do DIY projects to "take her mind off of things."

Name: Lizzy
Three words to describe yourself: strong, frank, organized
Lizzy moved to Kennesaw, Georgia at a young age from Jacksonville, Florida and is studying Business Management at Kennesaw State University. She would eventually like to start a ferrier business and be her "own boss" because she's "not really into the whole begging for a job deal." For the past ten years, Lizzy has been riding horses, and she says she was the typical child asking, "Can I have a pony, mom?" Currently, Lizzy is selling her trailer, equipment, and her horse named Dominick because she is "tired of competing" and wants to focus more on school at the moment. I asked what she enjoyed most about riding horse and Lizzy replied, "Building a relationship and being able to communicate to each other without saying a word." In her free time, Lizzy also enjoys riding motorcycles, without her parents knowing. Her goal is "to make six be happy digits, be happy doing it, and find a good husband."
