This is my Mom's Mom, and she is a really fly G-ma.
Name: Sylvia
Three words to describe yourself: creative, friendly, spiritual
"You know you're an adult when you can drink coffee and talk politics." These were the words spoken by my great grandfather, and a saying my Grandma frequently uses. My Grandma was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and is the eldest of six siblings, so she "always had to be so responsible." She was a young child during WWII, and her aunt and uncle owned a movie theater down the street from where she lived, so she recalls watching news reels of the War. She said, "It was very scary to watch . . . that's why I'm such a peace person." Her grandparents are originally from Hungary and Germany, and they emigrated around 1900 because "things were bad economically." Unfortunately my Grandma does not know a lot of information about our family history because my great-great grandmother would just "turn up her nose, shake her head, and roll her eyes." I guess things were that bad.
She had known my Grandpa from an early age because he lived down the street, but they did not start dating until after high school because he was five years older than she was. She married at age nineteen, and several years later my Grandpa was drafted for the Vietnam War. He couldn't fight, however, because he had flat feet. When my Grandma was twenty-seven, my Grandpa got a job offer in Tampa to sell architectural hardware like metal doors and frames. In Tampa, my Grandma sewed clothing for money and raised four kids. They lived in Tampa for thirty years until my Grandpa died from a heart attack. My Grandma then moved to Kennesaw, Georgia because my Aunt and Uncle were already living there. Her goal has been to "fix-up the yard and the house . . . and it's a work-in-progress." She wants "the place to look good, and when people come over, they can enjoy being here in the atmosphere." She learned how to garden at an early age because her parents had a garden as well. She says that her purpose in life is "to bring beauty in the world, whether it's through gardening or sewing something beautiful."
My Grandma is also a Unity of Kennesaw Chaplain, which is basically a prayer practitioner. My great Aunt introduced her to Unity Church when she sent my Grandma the Daily Word, after my Grandpa died. After this, she "slowly began to change [her] mind about spirituality." My Grandma also has two old-lady dogs and "twelve wonderful grandchildren!" She would eventually like to travel to Europe, especially Ireland.
