Name: Teman
Three words to describe yourself: bubbly, optimistic, dreamer
Teman is from Ethiopia and she came to the states when she was four. In her household, it was a requirement for her to speak Amharic. Her parents were both scholars and they had won a lottery for a free visa. They wanted to "pursue the American dream," Teman says. Both of her parents were protesters in Ethiopia and Teman comments, "I think that's where my 'dreamer' part comes in." The only other family member Teman has in the U.S. is her sister, and Teman visited her extended family in Ethiopia in 2008. She said that the visit was a culture shock when water only works three out of seven days during a week. At UGA, Teman is studying Broadcast Journalism and she says, "Growing up, I wanted to be an actress . . . actually I wanted to be a lot of things . . . I loved being in front of people . . . I could never see myself working in an office . . . now I want to help people . . . Broadcast Journalism would help me bring awareness." After graduating from UGA, Teman would like to either gain field experience or go to Columbia for graduate school. She says, "I research journalists who inspire me. They all have degrees from Columbia." Starting small, Teman would like to intern with CNN and "hopefully move into anchoring and become the next Robin Mead/Oprah Winfrey," Teman says. From there, Teman would retires as a philanthropist focusing on: issues in Ethiopia, equality and human rights in America, and breast cancer. In her life, Teman also wants to build a school in Africa, fall in love and have kids, and "literally reenact Eat, Pray, Love." Teman has traveled to Australia, Fiji, New Zealand in 2009 as a student ambassador for an organization called People to People. She says, "You have to see Australia . . . they all wear black in the day time . . . it's magic at night." A random fact about Teman is that she is scared of movies with gun shots. "I can tell when something bad is going to happen . . . I need to have control of the situation," she says. Teman likes looking at the sky and stars, watching How I Met Your Mother, and getting lost and being late with people. She also says, "I like meeting new people even if I don't remember their name; I remember the experience. It's more important."
